What is NeuroStar TMS Therapy?

NeuroStar uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to target key areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), NeuroStar TMS Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that does not involve anesthesia or sedation.

The leading scientific theory suggests that depression is caused by an imbalance in the brain's neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers that send signals between brain cells. NeuroStar TMS Therapy aims to correct this imbalance, offering a new hope for those struggling with depression.

How NeuroStar TMS Therapy Works

Before Treatment

You'll recline comfortably in the treatment chair.
A small, curved magnetic coil will be positioned lightly on your head.

During Treatment

NeuroStar delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of the brain.
You'll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head.

After Treatment

Treatment sessions last between 19 and 37 minutes, depending on your doctor's recommendation.
You can resume normal activities immediately after treatment.
There are no negative effects on memory or sleep, and you can drive yourself to and from sessions.

Is TMS Therapy a good alternative for patients who cannot tolerate the side effects of antidepressant medications?

Yes, TMS does not circulate in the blood throughout the body, avoiding systemic side effects like weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and nausea.

Is TMS Therapy like other alternative therapies that use magnets?

No, TMS Therapy uses pulsed magnetic fields that are much stronger and directed compared to the static magnetic fields used in other products.

Does it work?

In a study of “real-world” outcomes (meaning actual NeuroStar patients), 83% of people who completed the full NeuroStar treatment cycle experienced a measurable decrease in the severity of their depression, and 62% of those completing treatment saw full remission – meaning their depression effectively “went away.”

Does it hurt?

While there may be some minor discomfort at the treatment site (where the device touches your head), it generally subsides within the first week of treatment. There is no sedation or impact on your alertness. You can read, watch TV, or talk with your treatment coordinator during your session, and you can drive home immediately after treatment.

Does insurance cover it?

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is indicated for the treatment of depressive episodes and decreasing anxiety symptoms for those with comorbid anxiety symptoms in adult patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatment.
